ILCA-NA Laser District 3

The North American Laser Masters Championships was held recently at the Buffalo Canoe Club in Crystal Beach Ontario. My golden rule regarding laser racing is don't miss events held at BCC. I have sailed far and wide in District 3 and can't think of another major sailing club with awesome beach launching and club facilities as nice as at BCC. Every time we attend they bring out the hospitality and have excellent race committee. Unfortunately the wind conditions this year were challenging with light wind racing on Friday and Sunday, but no racing on Saturday. We were able to complete 5 races so we all enjoyed the benefit of a drop race.

The North American Masters Championships typically attracts a good crowd of geezer sailors, with sailors coming from the UK, across the US and across Canada. District 3 was well represented by 11 sailors from the Water Rat Sailing Club, 4 from Britannia Yacht Club and a slew of competitors from other clubs. In total there were 59 sailors registered in the laser fleet and 23 in the radial fleet.

Given the light and fluky conditions there was much comment in the boatyard about luck weighing heavier than skill, particularly after the first day of racing. This resulted in a lot of great sailors left scratching their heads given they were a lot deeper in the fleet than they were familiar with. Regardless, a number of sailors demonstrated good consistency throughout the regatta, particularly Dave Chapin, Roman Plutenko and Ernesto Rodriquez who were 1st , 2nd and 3rd in the laser fleet. Chris van Rossem of the Water Rats showed off his light air skills and was the top Canadian sailor in 7th.

In the radial fleet, the notorious Iron Master, Peter Seidenberg, continued to demonstrate that age is no obstacle to outstanding sailing performance by finishing first, followed by Nigel Heath of the Water Rats and Christine Neville from Newport.
