The Royal Canadian Yacht Club hosted the District 3 Championships in Toronto June 12-13.
Saturday was raced in an ENE wind, ranging from 6-14 knots. It was important to stay in the pressure and to be patient, waiting for the next shift in the oscillating breeze. Downwinds were tricky with a big swell coming across the course which sucked the fleet to the left, making it easy to sail a lot of extra distance.
In the first race I started near the favoured pin end with Greg Clunies, and he rounded ahead of me at the weather mark. I drew even with him on the first run and we went to opposite gates. Greg crossed ahead of me halfway up the beat, but I hitched out and got some more pressure and was able to pass him to take the race.
In the second race I had a good start and rounded the weather mark in 1st in a puff and was able to extend on the first run. I covered the fleet on the next beat and won the race.
In the third race I didn't have a good start and was forced to tack out, but was able to make gains by staying in the pressure and on the correct tack and rounded the weather mark 4th, close to the boats ahead. I had a good run and rounded the leeward in first and then covered the fleet to win the race.
In the fourth and last race of the day I had a good start and was able to control the fleet. On the last run, the rain came in and the wind decreased. Evert McLaughlin came from behind and was able to sail around me in some pressure and finished just ahead of me.
There was no racing on Sunday, so Saturday stood as the final, which gave me the win overall with a total of five points. Evert was second with 17, and Paul Throop with 26.
